Hi, i'm a Maclay's spectre stick insect,I know thats a bit
of mouthful so you can call me Wiggles
I come from Australia where I spend most of my time hanging
around in eucalyptus trees, which by the way is also what
I love to eat!
I'm a pretty big stick insect and can reach
20cm, us girls are actually much bigger than the boys, they
don't get more than 11cm.
We spectre stick insects are very good at hiding, and
also diquising ourselves as other things. I look very much
like a dry leaf so i'm tough to spot, handy for avoiding
getting eaten by predators! I bet your woundering why i'm
called wiggles, well it's because if something scares me
I start to wiggle; this helps me look even more like a leaf
blowing in the wind. Also if something does manage to spot
me I raise my tail over my body to look like a venomous scorpion,
that usually see's them off!

Pleased to meet you, my name
is Lulu and I'm a giant train millipede
I come from Africa, where I
can be found living under rocks and logs, in moist soil on
the forest floor.
I like to eat almost any plants, leaves or friut that
have fallen to the ground and started to rot, the squishier
the better!
Giant African train millipedes are one of the longest
species in the world, the longest ever recorded is 38.7cm,
and
yep you've guessed it, we have a lot of legs, actually
i'm not sure exactly how many legs i've got because everytime
I try to work it out by the time I get from one end to
the other i've lost count! Maybe you can help, if you look
at my picture I have lots of segments that make up my body
and I have 2 pairs of legs on each segment except for 3
segments that have only 1 pair each. So.... if you count
all my segments you should be able to do a quick sum and
work out the exact number of legs I have!

Hay i'm a giant hissing cockroach
I come from madagascar, and I can be found amongst the leaf
litter and rotting wood of forest floors.
I am one of the worlds largest cockroaches and can grow to
8cm in length.
I'd like to set the record straight and state that I am not
a pest cockroach species and do not wish to be associated with
some of my cousins that like to invade human homes and make
a nuisance of themselves. They really do give the family a
bad name! I am actually a very important member of the forest
ecosystem because I eat all the decaying leaves and plants
and help to create nutrient rich soils.
Because i'm so big i'd make a very tasty snack for a hungry
mammal or bird, so I have a trick up my sleeve for protection.
If I feel threatened I can make a loud hissing noise by pushing
air out through my "special spiricles" (these are
the holes through which I breath) this hisss is pretty loud
and tends to scare off anything that might try to make a meal
of me.

Hola, I'm chantico a mexican red knee tarantula!
I live in the forested hills of Southwestern Mexico where
I dig a burrow into soil banks among ground vegetation. I spend
most of my time hiding in my burrow waithing for something to
walk past that I can leap on and make a meal of. all 8 of my
legs have very sensative tips which enable me to feel vibrations
in the ground and along the fine silk web that I line my burrow
with. This way I can feel if something like a tasty cricket or
beetle wounders near my burrow.
For some reason some people are a bit afraid of me, maybe
it's because some spiders can have a nasty venomous bite. People
shouldn't be worried about meeting me though because i'm very
friendly and can't realy hurt anyone. Maybe people are put
off by my 8 hairy legs, well i'm very proud of my legs, they
help me hunt and climb and dig and spin silk sheets.

Hay there, I'm Dobin the horse-headed grasshopper!
That's right i'm a grasshopper not a stick insect though I
admit I do look a bit like a stick insect, people tell me that
my head looks like a horses, can't see it myself! you can tell
that i'm a grasshopper by looking at my long powerful jumping
legs, well I used to jump when I was a baby grasshopper if something
scared me but as an adult I just wonder along quite slowly.
I come from Equador and live in forest and scrubland areas
where I like to hang around in the branches and leaves of trees
all day, just nibbling on leaves and keeping a keen eye on
my surroundings, I can see all the way behind me without turning
my head, so nothing can sneek up on me!

Hi, my name is Daun and I'm a leaf insect!
I'm from malaysia and my name 'Daun' is the malaysian word
for leaf, believe it or not I am an insect and I'm made of
the same
stuff all other insects are made of not leaves!
Although if after looking at me you did think I must be made
of leaves then i'm doing a good job, I challenge you to try and
spot me hiding in the foliage of a tree. The secret to looking
like a leaf is in the detail you know, look at the nibbled and
rotten looking edges of my legs and abdomon!
My favourite food is, yes you guessed it - Leaves; It's a
good thing that us leaf insects have such a good sense of smell
because
otherwise
we would mistake each other for a leaf and might take a bite!

Hi, I'm Sidney the giant African
land snail!
I'm from Africa and spend most of the day buried in
the wet soil or in damp holes under logs and rocks, at
night time I come out and rush around in search of food
and yes, just because I can't go all that fast it doesn't
mean i'm not in a hurry!
You'd have difficulty moving quickly too, if you had to
carry a huge and heavy shell around with you all the time!
mind you it does come in handy for protection, and it helps
me to conserve water when things get a bit dry, I just
pull myself all in, seal up with a water-proof covering
over my aperture (thats my shell opening) and go to sleep
till the rains come.
I am a herbivore and like to eat a variety of fruit and
vegetables, I also need a lot of calcium, which I get from
nibbling rocks, and discarded bits of shell and bone from
other creatures. Oh and us giant snails are also partial
to a beer on occasion, it's the yeast you see, we love
it!
